Module II
Miraculous Abundance How to Grow More Nourishment than You Ever Imagined!

May 8 – 29, 2024
4 Wednesday Evenings
7 – 9:30 pm

Take a moment to consider that 50% of Americans were farming in 1880. Now, less than 2% of the nation is employed in agriculture.
From another perspective, in 1945, Americans grew 45% of their food in their backyard gardens. Now, we grow 0.1% of our food in our backyards.

Growing an abundance of organic food and wild edibles on a small scale, with regenerative gardening methods that yield high results, is attainable and demonstrated through five decades of experience.

This module will cover practical protocols developed by Shantree after 50-years of research and accomplishments in regenerative gardening.

Ecosystem cultivation aims to imitate the structure and function of natural ecosystems to produce food and medicine. At its most practical level, it involves designing groups of plants, also known as polycultures. A successful polyculture combines useful plants and reduces competition, leading to increased yields and decreased need for outside inputs such as water and fertilizer. Polyculture design is the most exciting part of designing a garden, which will be explored through exercises and techniques in each session. Participants will observe, evaluate, and redesign perennial polycultures at The Living Centre.

Imagine Gardening with this method, you will use:

  • 67% to 88% less water,

  • 50% less purchased organic fertilizer while creating a

  • 100% increase in soil fertility!

Module III
Resilient Forest Gardening:
Edibles from the Edge

June 5-26, 2023
Wednesday Evenings
7-9:30 pm

Forest ecologies have valuable qualities we can learn from and emulate in our culture to increase our nourishment.

Forest ecologies are:

  • Self-maintaining, renewing, fertilizing, and propagating themselves without an individual’s input

  • Self-building, storing, and conserving clean air, cleaning water, nutrients, soil excellence, and biodiversity.

  • Self-sustaining – a system that is stable, irrepressible, and adjustable.

These qualities arise from the dynamics of the forest as a complete system rather than from any individual components that make up the forest. To create productive edible ecosystems that exhibit these qualities, it is essential to thoroughly understand the forest’s various structures, functions, patterns, and processes and use this knowledge wisely.

We will explore the vision, theory, and practice of designing healthy and resilient medicinal ecosystems using temperate deciduous forests as models. This will be done through Canada—a case study of our oldest forest garden in C, experiential exercises, and design projects. You will learn how the architecture, social structure, underground economics, and successional processes of natural forests can be applied to the design of herbal ecosystems. At our demonstration and research gardens, you will design a range of compilations of food-producing ecologies and learn various ecological design processes.ns.ns.

You will be inspired and empowered to design ecological forest gardens.

“The keystone of forest gardening is a paradigm shift in our human consciousness.
From monoculture mind to polyculture mind;
From separation to unity;
From exploitation and manipulation to respect and interdependence;
From intervener to ecosystem participant.”
- Dave Jacke

This course focuses on re-weaving ourselves back into modern culture, making our vision and purpose a reality. This time focuses on supporting you in clarifying, shaping, energizing and fulfilling your vision. We give plenty of time to explore how our unique service can help craft positive cultures of connection in an increasingly chaotic and unstable world. Identifying essential inner and outer resources, creating a supportive community, and following the herbal guidelines will allow us to confidently anchor and nurture the service passion you bring to our community’s healing. This final weekend will allow you to share your love and creativity with our community.

Ecosystem mimicry is one of the concepts at the heart of ecological regeneration and forest gardening. A thriving forest, for example, strives to replicate the structure, relationships, and successional pathways of natural forest ecosystems. I’m fortunate to have lived on this land for over 40-years and share my passion on this site every year. This allowed me to know this ecosystem deeper each year, try experiments, and see what happens. This landscape will be the playground to learn, share, and explore how this land nourishes and regenerates itself. Learning how to see through the lens of an ecosystem will be our teacher/mentor through the seasons.

By using practical biodynamic-biointensive and regenerative design techniques, you will learn essential skills to replenish and regenerate ourselves, our ecological biospheres, and our human communities.

Research indicators and case studies.

“All the beauty that’s been lost before. Wants to find us again.”

The Process

Much like a traditional apprenticeship, mentorship is one of society’s oldest forms of experiential education. In many cultures, herbal training occurs almost exclusively in a setting where experienced herbalists work closely with others to share their accumulated wisdom. The structure of these relationships varies widely, but all desire to share information while offering support, guidance, and critical feedback in common.

This learning process supports individuals in becoming confident, skilled educators. Often, those who have completed training actively seek the support and guidance of an experienced forest gardener to act as a mentor.

Ecological design heavily relies on community involvement, specifically the creation of biointensive forest gardens. This includes relationships between people and nature, people and plants, and most importantly, the relationship between mentor and student. Seeking and learning from mentors is a common practice among forest gardeners, as it is an effective way to pass down ecological knowledge to future generations. Many forest gardeners credit their mentors as instrumental in shaping their careers; some continue to work with their mentors today. Passing ecological wisdom through mentorship has been a longstanding tradition in this field.

The relationship between a mentor and a student is precious and unique as it helps individuals navigate their way. It enables them to identify who they aspire to be and which direction they want to take in life. Mentors act as role models – individuals who have already gone through what the students are experiencing and have achieved their goals. Having a mentor also provides valuable insight and perspective when faced with challenging situations. When confronted with new problems or a complicated case study, and students cannot find answers, or when they feel lost and unsure of their path, mentors can offer encouragement, fresh ideas, and wisdom from similar experiences. This support can help students find the missing pieces of their puzzle.

Precisely, what is the role of a mentor?

The word “mentor” is defined as an experienced and trusted advisor. However, each relationship is unique since every mentor-student relationship involves two unique individuals. It is up to the parties involved to create a relationship that works best for them.

Mentorship can take on various forms, from informal ones resembling a friendship to formal ones involving payment for the mentor’s time and guidance. In such instances, a written contract is usually established to outline the specific goals and desired outcomes the student and mentor aspire to achieve from the relationship.

A mentor supports and guides a student in their personal and professional growth, whether through a formal or informal arrangement. They assist us in troubleshooting, but they should not provide direct answers. A good mentor challenges their mentee to think critically and offers helpful suggestions when problems arise. The Forest Gardening, Ecological Biointensive & Rewilding Design Course recognizes our efforts and encourages us when we need it. They can also help us stay realistic and hold us to a high standard, providing valuable skills and knowledge to serve us well.

Having mentors in our lives who can serve as role models is essential. However, we should be cautious not to idolize them. Mentors are human beings, and they have their strengths and weaknesses. Nonetheless, we should still look up to them and strive to emulate their good qualities. As educators, advisors, and experts in their fields, our mentors show us how to behave and succeed.

It is important to remember that having a mentor is not a substitute for learning about plants and ecological design on your own. Instead, it should complement your studies and help you grow. Trustworthiness is essential in a mentor, and the relationship should always be conducted with professionalism. The mentor and the student should always have mutual respect in the relationship.

“It is the supreme art of the educator to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.” - Albert Einstein
