Earthen Floor Craftsmanship
Where Earth Becomes Art Beneath Your Feet
Shantree Kacera, RH, DN, Ph.D.
“He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman. He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist.” ~Saint Francis of Assisi
For more than twenty-five years, we have lived, designed, built, and taught natural building and permaculture as an integrated way of life. During those years, we have discovered that the places we create profoundly shape how we feel, think, and live. A building is not simply a shelter. It is an extension of the landscape, a reflection of our values, and an opportunity to live in greater harmony with the living world.
Natural building reminds us that some of the world's finest building materials are neither manufactured nor imported. They come from the Earth itself. Clay, sand, stone, wood, straw, natural fibres, and plant oils have been used for thousands of years to create homes that are beautiful, resilient, and remarkably enduring.
Our The Art of Natural Building: Earthen Floor Workshop is an invitation to rediscover this ancient craftsmanship while applying it to today's ecological challenges. Rather than simply teaching how to build an earthen floor, we explore an entirely different relationship with building itself, one that values simplicity, beauty, resilience, and respect for the Earth.
Building with Nature
Modern construction often asks how quickly and cheaply we can build.
Natural building asks a different question.
How can we create spaces that nourish both people and the planet while leaving the lightest ecological footprint possible?
The answer begins with observation.
Nature has refined her designs over millions of years. Healthy forests waste nothing. Living systems continuously recycle materials, conserve energy, and work in partnership with their surroundings. Natural building follows these same principles by using minimally processed materials that work with local climates rather than against them.
The result is architecture that feels alive.
The Beauty of Earthen Floors
Few building elements create such an immediate feeling of warmth and groundedness as an earthen floor.
Every floor reflects the unique character of the local soil from which it is created. Rich colours, subtle textures, and handcrafted finishes ensure that no two floors are ever identical.
Unlike many manufactured flooring systems, earthen floors can be maintained and renewed rather than discarded and replaced. Properly built and sealed, they offer remarkable durability while retaining the warmth and character that only natural materials can provide.
Walking barefoot across an earthen floor is often enough to understand why these floors have been cherished for centuries.
Building Together
Natural building naturally creates community.
Friends, neighbours, families, and future homeowners often work side by side, mixing earth, preparing materials, placing floors, and celebrating each stage of the process together.
The building itself becomes only part of the experience.
Equally important are the friendships formed, the skills learned, and the sense of accomplishment that comes from creating something lasting with your own hands.
Many participants tell us that this shared experience becomes one of the most meaningful parts of the entire journey.
Learning by Doing
This workshop is designed as a fully hands on learning experience.
Together we explore every stage of earthen floor construction while gaining the confidence to apply these methods to future projects.
Participants learn how to understand soil composition, prepare stable foundations, create balanced earthen mixes, install floor layers, apply natural finishes, and maintain earthen floors for decades of use.
Throughout the workshop we also discuss how earthen floors integrate beautifully into larger natural building and permaculture systems, creating homes that are healthy, comfortable, and deeply connected to their environment.
Why Natural Building?
Natural building offers far more than an alternative method of construction. It represents a different way of thinking about shelter, community, and our relationship with the Earth.
Some of the many benefits include:
Building with locally available, minimally processed natural materials.
Creating healthy indoor environments with breathable, non toxic surfaces.
Reducing environmental impact through low embodied energy materials.
Increasing thermal comfort through the natural thermal mass of earth.
Learning practical skills that can be used for future home and building projects.
Creating buildings that are repairable, renewable, and designed to last for generations.
Strengthening community through collaborative, hands on building experiences.
Deepening your connection with nature by working directly with the materials of the Earth.
Discovering that beautiful, functional buildings do not have to come at the expense of the planet.

Whether you are dreaming of building your own home, adding natural elements to an existing space, or simply curious about ecological construction, The Art of Natural Building: Earthen Floor Workshop offers an inspiring place to begin.
Over the course of this immersive workshop, you will gain practical experience, confidence, and a deeper appreciation for one of humanity's oldest and most enduring building traditions. You will mix earth with your own hands, learn directly from experienced natural builders, and leave with knowledge that can be applied to homes, studios, retreats, community spaces, and future natural building projects.
More than learning how to create an earthen floor, you will experience how building itself can become an act of creativity, cooperation, ecological responsibility, and joyful craftsmanship.
We invite you to join us as we rediscover the timeless art of building with the Earth beneath our feet and creating places that nourish both people and the living world.
