“Emptying the Body,
Remembering the Essential”
“When we empty ourselves, life reveals what truly nourishes us.”
What remains when everything unnecessary falls away?
Fasting is one of the oldest ways we have of returning to ourselves. When food becomes quiet for a time, something else begins to speak. The body has space to rest, our senses begin to sharpen, and we become aware of how much of our hunger has little to do with food. Fasting asks us to listen differently.
The fasting path is more than cleansing the body. It is an emptying, a simplifying, a willingness to meet what arises when our usual comforts are set aside. Hunger comes and goes. Emotions surface. Old habits reveal themselves. Beneath all of this, there can be a surprising stillness, and within that stillness we begin to remember what truly nourishes us.
I have come to see fasting as a practice of relationship with the body, with life force, and with the deeper intelligence of life itself. We consume less so we can feel more. We become quiet enough to hear what the body has been saying all along. In that space, fasting becomes less about going without and more about returning to what is essential.
The fasting path is a return to what is essential.

About Shantree
For more than fifty years, I have explored fasting as a living practice, returning to it through many seasons of my life. What began as an interest in cleansing and renewal gradually became something much deeper. Fasting taught me about hunger, attachment, energy, clarity, emotion, and the intelligence that begins to speak when we stop continually feeding the body.
Over these decades, I have experienced and guided many forms of fasting, from simple periods of dietary rest to longer cleansing and spiritual fasts. I came to understand that hunger reaches far beyond food. There are hungers of the body, heart, mind, our habits and relationships, and deeper longings we may rarely stop long enough to hear.
My book, Spiritual Fasting, grows from these decades of personal experience, observation, and guiding others. It explores fasting as a way of listening more carefully to the body, conserving life force, meeting our attachments, and creating enough inner space to hear what everyday life can easily drown out.
After more than fifty years, fasting still holds mystery for me. Each fast is different because we are different each time we enter it.
Fasting empties the bowl so we can discover what has been nourishing us all along.
